What is the ideal temperature that you keep your thermostat set on in your home? Are you like some people, and adjust the thermostat throughout the afternoon or night? Personally, I like keeping my thermostat at the same temperature because I feel it causes less wear and tear on my HVAC unit. Based on the recommendations from the Department of Energy, the ideal temperature to set the thermostat in the winter time months is 67 degrees, and 72 degrees during the Summer. According to the organization, these temperatures will conserve energy without sacrificing the comfort inside the home. Since I discovered this information I have been using the settings for my home. The winter time setting of 67 does keep my cabin really comfortable. However, in the Summer, 72 degrees is ok during the afternoon, however it’s a bit too hot at night. So, while I can keep the thermostat at 72 degrees in the afternoon time without sacrificing any comfort, at night I always drop the thermostat down to 66 degrees. When my friend and I sleep our body temperature rises, so it makes sense to adjust the thermostat accordingly. The good news is, I have seen the savings on my energy bill after I began to use the proposed settings for the thermostat. The savings won’t make me rich, however it will add up over time, so I will continue to use it. I will eventually invest in a programmable thermostat so that I don’t have to manually adjust the temperature every night. The money that I am saving by using these proposed settings will help to cover the cost of the thermostat. That for sure will be money well spent in the end.
