Gas furnace quit and it was my fault

When my daughter woke me up in the middle of the night from a very sound sleep, the first thing I noticed was that I could see my breath.

I knew right then that my mistake had come back to bite me. The gas furnace wasn’t running and it was one of the coldest nights of the year. My wife and I sleep with a great big feather comforter over us so I didn’t really notice. I burrow down into that bed and let the comforter lock in the heat. Plus, I keep the thermostat in the mid 60’s during the night to save some money on the heating costs. Another thing I decided to save money on was the heating maintenance. And that was a terrible mistake. I really don’t know what I was thinking really. I think it’s because I did the same thing last Winter and the Winter before. Since the pandemic started, I’ve been finding any way I can to get the most from our finances. But going without the heating maintenance was clearly a mistake. Still, I thought that since I’d been pretty consistent for a lot of years, I’d be able to squeak by without this HVAC service for a while. I put my daughter in the warm spot next to my wife and went downstairs to see if I could restart the gas furnace. Of course, that didn’t work so I had to call for emergency HVAC service and I could here the cash register sound in my mind as I did it. The HVAC technician was able to change out the failed part pretty quickly. So I accomplished my goal of getting the heating back on. But he also confirmed that this was avoidable had I gotten the heating maintenance.
