I was fortunate enough to have an instructor and mentor in the industry. Long before I got our certification I was what my fine friend and I call a “helper” which basically means I was the assistant to a Heating as well as Air Conditioning tech. My Uncle Pedro had been in the industry for 4 decades, and despite the fact that he was fully retired he was still a great source of lavish information… Uncle Pedro told myself and others that our task as a helper was to listen and learn. I was getting paid for the hours of course, but it was also a free training period for the rest of our career. Most Heating as well as Air Conditioning techs beginning out as helpers in the industry, which is the way it has regularly been because of the complexity of the work. Uncle Pedro called up some of his old friends in the local Heating as well as Air Conditioning community and got me a starting position as a helper to a certified tech. I did our best to follow the advice of our uncle Pedro, and paid close attention to everything the certified Heating as well as Air Conditioning expert did and said. I even brought a notebook to jot things down. At the end of the labor week I would go hang out with Uncle Pedro, who would roll a few joints and discuss heating and cooling details with me. Between the two men l gained an incredible amount of wisdom about heating and cooling service over the course of a few weeks. Pretty soon I think I’ll be prepared to go for an Heating as well as Air Conditioning certification myself.
