I got in the van and told him where to drive
I didn’t realize what a disadvantage my newest HVAC technician was at, until I saw him climbing into the new service van. It wasn’t nearly as big as the larger diesel vans. Harry was almost 7½ feet tall, and weighed in at about 400 pounds. He was squeezing his long legs under the steering wheel and trying to hunch over to drive. I walked out and told him there was another service van he could use. He told me he was okay with this one, but I didn’t want him that uncomfortable. He promised he was used to it, but I wasn’t. He came to me with glowing references, but no one had alluded to his size. He looked a football player. I showed him to the service van I always used. I told him he was the only HVAC technician to enter this vehicle, and he better treat it like it was his grandmother’s. He laughed and agreed. He said his brother was an HVAC technician and his service van looked like it was being lived in by a slob. I knew Harry wouldn’t do that to my service van. I handed him his HVAC service list, and he stared at it. He didn’t know how to get there. He asked where my GPS was? I didn’t have GPS in this van, and Harry didn’t have his personal phone. I got in the van and told him where to drive. Once we got done with the first AC repair, I understood why he had such great reference. The man was polite, and excellent at air conditioning repairs. I knew I had made the right choice for a new HVAC technician.
