My dream of living outside the city has finally and thankfully come true.
I wasn’t so sure that it would.
But better late than never I suppose. However, being a writer, I had to wait til I was nearly fifty before I was able to get my dream place out of the city. I’m just so thankful that there are no more winters with radiant heating in an apartment. Apartment life in the city is something that you eventually just adjust to. But when it comes to residential HVAC, I was never able to really adjust. I always lived in buildings that had big boilers in the basement and provided heat via radiant heating. But it was either was on and super warm to the point of running you out of there or it was off. Those were the two choices. And in the summer, the air conditioning was limited to the window unit in my bedroom. Now, I live 90 minutes out of the city on a piece of property with a great little house and all these outbuildings. It was once a small working farm so all the outbuildings are in good shape structurally but really weren’t being utilized. So my wife and I are taking one at a time and adding electricity, a concrete floor and residential HVAC. The HVAC equipment comes courtesy of the local HVAC company. And we’re using ductless heat pumps which do an amazing job inside these old spaces. So far, we’ve done two and we’re looking forward to doing two more next year.
