We have been together for 19 years now, my wife and I.
It’s difficult to believe, sort of. I believe that the lack of kids in our house who share the central air conditioning contributes to the skepticism. I suppose we would be more aware of just how much time has passed if we had living, breathing reflections of all that time all around us. However, we decided against having kids in favor of our careers. We became friends right away when we first met in college because we shared a fervent passion for our respective fields of study. We studied together for many nights inside the radiant heating of our respective dorm rooms. We didn’t really start to become more than friends until after college. As master’s degree candidates, we wound up at the same university. We then understood how much our lives were complemented by one another. At that time, I was residing off campus in a one bedroom apartment. I tried to woo my future wife in this manner. There’s no doubt that back then, I preferred geekdom to romance. But when it came to the romantic front, I really did everything I could. My single mother raised me, so I picked up cooking pretty early. My current girlfriend was the first person I started inviting to my apartment for special dinners. I lit probably 30 candles in an effort to maintain the romantic atmosphere. Although it almost choked the HVAC system, it was romantic nonetheless. Without realizing it, I kept doing this after every meal, resulting in almost no airflow through the air filter due to the burnt wax buildup. Eventually, I just checked the air filter because the heat pump was running nonstop at one point. Wax covered the entire surface of it. That heat pump nearly died when I started romancing my wife.
