During my formative years our nation entered the most recent economic depression, and as you can imagine, my outlook on the world was deeply affected by the financial state of the country.
- I grew up feeling like I would be lucky to get any job, let alone to enter a fulfilling career.
I never expected to be well paid or well compensated with benefits. I certainly always felt like jobs were temporary and easily lost when times were bad. That’s how I developed a certain fear of working for small businesses. It always seemed more secure to work for a large corporation in my experience. These days, however, I am working for a tiny HVAC business in town. I found the position with the ventilation supplier on accident as I was searching for a reputable heating and cooling company to service our own AC one day. The nearest heating and cooling supplier had a job posting on their website that advertised an opening in the business office of the repair shop. Within two weeks I was working for the little ventilation business with great trepidation, waiting for the economy to collapse and my butt to be homeless. However, that never happened. It’s been over 5 years so far, and I am now the biggest boss at the little HVAC repair company. We have tripled in size over the past few years, and I direct over 25 individual ventilation technicians each day. Rather than losing my job and my shirt thanks to a failed small business, I have been instrumental in growing this miniscule heating and cooling repair shop into a bustling and renowned ventilation company. I’ve gained more through hands-on learning in the exotic HVAC industry than I ever could have learned at a major corporation.
