As an HVAC worker, I have had our fair share of bizarre and humorous experiences on the job, however one of the most memorable moments happened when I was called to a customer’s house to service their a/c, but when I arrived, I was greeted by an elderly lady who asked myself and others if I could help her “catch the thief”, confused, I asked what she meant and she explained that she had been hearing bizarre noises coming from her air ducts and she was sure that someone had broken into her house through the vents, but i chuckled a bit and reassured her that it was just the sound of her a/c running and that there was no one in the ducts, but to prove our point, I climbed up to the attic and crawled into the ducts to show her that there was no one there; Just as I was about to emerge from the ducts, I heard her shouting from below “Oh thank goodness, he iscaught him, he iscaught him!” I was momentarily taken aback, however then all of us realized that she was referring to me.
When I finally emerged from the ducts, she hugged myself and others and thanked myself and others for catching the thief.
I could not help however laugh at the situation and explain that I was just doing our job as an HVAC worker… She apologized for the confusion and I went on to service her a/c. The whole incident was so funny that I still remember it to this afternoon. I consistently approach each job with a sense of humor and a willingness to listen, because you never guess what kind of story you might come away with.
