One of the things about having a cabin in the woods is the added amount of work it takes to heat it. We only used the cabin during the summer and over the winter holidays. Our family enjoyed going there for Christmas, and my husband and I would take a long weekend to get the cabin ready. We would clean the cabin, get the fireplace and the chimney cleaned, and decorate. This year, there had been a lot of storms that had knocked trees down. We wanted to clean up some of the mess, but we knew the downed trees would be perfect for the fireplace. We cut up the downed wood, split some of it, and piled it on the back porch so we had it for heat. Before we left, we had enough wood to keep us going through the entire holiday season, and then some. After cutting wood and piling it up on the porch, we had to take some in to get warm. It had been snowing the entire time we were in the woods. We were cold and starting to feel miserable. My husband got the fire started in the fireplace while I got the generator going to get some hot water. It wasn’t long before we were getting our hot baths and then we snuggled in front of the fireplace. I had to admit that this long weekend was the highlight of our holiday season. We got to sit in front of the fireplace and have some alone time. Once the holidays started, there would be no more alone time for us.
